The regal look of the young banana leaf reminds us of lush tropical vegetation in Maunawili on the windward side of Oahu. The elegance of how each leaf bends and dances in the wind creates a beautiful feast for the eyes. Bananas (Mai’a) commonly grow in valleys or sheltered patches around the islands. They are planted around lush dwellings or on well-watered banks of taro loi. This pareo print reminds us of the beauty and utility of the Mai’a. It also reminds us of a Hawaiian phrase Aohe hua o ka maia i ka la hookahi. (Bananas do not fruit in a single day.) A gentle reminder to us all that good things take time.
